I am filled with awe and wonder every time I see a film of Pantani climbing. Each of us likely has a special memory that captures the essence, the sublime grace of this great cyclist. For me, perhaps nothing will ever be so beautiful in the long history of our sport as Pantani climbing the Alpe d'Huez in the 1997 Tour de France.
Dr. Giggles, you are so right. My memory is of the end of a hot July day after a hard days work at my first shop job. We all went down for a beer at a local college sports bar, where a lone TV was tuned to the Tour in a corner with no sound. I stood there, afixed to the image of a standing, thrashing Marco Pantani as he rode away from Miguel Indurain up l'Alpe on his way to a fine stage win. That would have been 1995.
I just get a pain in my chest when I see a video, an image of my hero. To me he is the greatest. Nobody had the awe,the glow, like il Pirata. People in Italy still write up the roads with his name during the Giro. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this great rider. Pantani Vive. Ari
