Been riding quite a bit and have been enjoying the mildest winter in Syracuse NY since 1966. It has snowed, it has thawed, the roads are great, we have the best road department in the country. Commuted all december and am aiming at doing the same for january. Hope all is well.

Syracuse Bicycle is proud to announce the Surly Snow Bike Demo. It will take place in Longbranch Park , in Liverpool, N.Y. on Saturday the 28th from 12-3 p.m. Come on over and experience a fat bike. Bring some warm clothes, some snow boots and have a blast. I personally have been on a Fat bike for my 3rd season and have been able to stay outdoors in the worst of weather. My trainers have gathered dust while I am outside exercising.

Gumby, our esteemed Secretary back on track after a long recovery from knee surgery. You see he had a twin brother living in his knee for the longest time. Now he has the knee all to himself.

Continues to get out in the dark and worst of weather just to prove that anybody can ride in Cheater Weather. Snow bikes are the way of the future, so keep on eye out and start saving some dough to invest in one. Go fast, but also keep in mind that having fun while you ride is also a good investment. The Central New York Slender Fungus will be organizing some cool rides this spring and summer and I hope you can become part of it. Until then, keep on riding your bikes.

Lake effect snow we received couple days ago.

So after getting an email from Aaron Gammel, we finished DK200 together, I set up my Gunnar with a 34x16 and set out for a spin. Just wanted to be outside and get my 15 miles in. I took route 5 and headed out to Chittenango. The sun was very shiny and the air was very cold. My feet once again got frozen as I completed my 15th day in a row for January. Gunnar ran great and I am starting to think about bikes, gearing and parts for Trans Iowa.
It is going to be a great year.

I had a quick window in the afternoon to get out and stretch the legs. I got out with the C-dale mountain bike and it was great. The roads were covered in snow and I headed south, straight into the hills. I took Brickyard Falls, then Broadhead and then headed south on Watervale. My intent was to get in a quick 15 miles. I turned around at the halfway mark and started descending. The temps were dropping quick and between that, going downhill and having a headwind I quickly got really cold. My feet froze and my sweat felt really chilly under my jacket. Getting home was great and it took a while for the toes to warm up again. As always, I was glad to get out because there is no such thing as a bad ride.

Erie Canal Trail. Fightclub, snow riding, gravel.

7 degrees the other night. Did even feel it. Rode through Green lakes, hooked up with the Canal. 15 miles Total on the Pugs.

Found some falls outside of Manlius. Then I got lost.

Getting Dark, one small blinker and no map. Out in Oran somewhere.

Commuting on the Erie Canal. Snow is packed, but will melt soon since we are already having spring.

Happy New Year to everyone. 2011 was a stellar year and I am in midst of collecting some images to come up with a recap of what went down. I believe some of the riding that took place will never be repeated. It was that good.
Right now I am just keeping my mileage up and revving up for Trans Iowa. I did manage to ride all 31 days of December and so far for January I have ridden all 6 days. This time of the year I am more interested in staying on the bike and being consistent rather than going out and hammering like a madman. I have been riding the Salsa Selma, The Pugsley and the new Cannondale Mtn Bike.
Today's commute was warm with temps in the high 30's. I had shorts tights, wool base layer, wool sweater and windbreaker and was dying of heat.

On other news went to the Green Lakes State Park yesterday for 2 hours and pounded on some trails. Just a dusting of snow and the trails were fantastic. Got really tired with all the hills but had a blast getting off the roads and traffic. Salsa El Mariachi functioned great and truly love having that bike.

On other other news we have received our pre-order of Moonlanders and they are outrageous. I cannot explain how well designed they are and how many innovative features this bike has. 100 mm rims, extra wide tires, tons of clearance, thumbshifers, double upfront. This bike is a freakin' Gran Slam Dunk! Come in an check them out, take one out and test ride the darn thing.

Lots going on here at Syracuse Bicycle. Giggles and I have been consistently riding into work. Weather has been cooperative and we are truly thankful for that. Yesterday we started Fight Club rides and it was a blast. The Erie Canal is awesome, surface was a bit slick and it was just great. Giggles, D.B and meself showed up for the first ride. In other news we have received the incredible fenders from Crud. They fit on the Madone Project One and make for a cool ride when the roads are wet. The fenders are light, easy to install and easy to remove. They retail for 50 bucks and we got them.
We also received two Quarq Cranks to be installed on Cervelos. That is the news for now.

Fight Club Tuesdays Announced.

We will be starting night rides at the Erie Canal on Tuesday nights in an effort to stay away from indoor exercising as long as possible. Bring your Mountain Bike, Cross Bike, County Bike or whatever you have and join in on the fun. We will ride for as long as we want and the pace will be slow to medium slow. As the ride develops we will go further and make more frequent stops.Bring something to eat and drink and dress warm and dry. Call SB with any questions. It is not a race and You are responsible for yourself. Our departure time will be after we get done with work. Around 730 or so. We can meet at the Butternut Trailhead (Intersection of Butternut and Kinne roads.

Trans Iowa V8 update

The Slender Fungus continues to linger under people's toes.

Cookie, Dr. Giggles and Meself have made the roster to the Trans Iowa V8. The event will take place on April 28-29th, 2012. Gumby and T.J. have showed interest in coming with us. There will be long months of training through the winter to maintain and gain fitness. More to come about all the usual craziness. For the time being I am putting in about 150 miles a week. I have been riding every day of the week in my new program of Slow Daily Riding.

Hello everyone. Things starting to settle here. Yesterday I sent out my postcard with UPS and today it arrived in Iowa. I hope to see my name on the roster tomorrow and to make the trek out to Iowa in April. The shop has been going awesome and I truly love my co-workers. They are helping us out a ton with getting to know the area, where to go food shopping, where to find firewood, and a bunch of other stuff. The wife is having some luck with getting some callbacks from job searches. The younger kids are getting used to school and liking their peers. I have been commuting to work every day and getting in about 150 miles a week solid. We look foward to riding all winter with Dr. Giggles, getting some snow shoeing in, riding the Pugsley, maybe try some cross country skiing.

So almost 4 weeks without a post. Have been busy settling into work and getting the household straight. It was quite the adventure to get here. The wife drove the 26' truck all the way here and at some point we got separated. They took the wrong turn, ended up coming in about 4 hours later. We unpacked and worked hard for about a week to get the beds built and to situate all the bike crap that we brought over. Almost 4 weeks later and the house is almost there, the kids are in school, I am working and the wife is waiting on an interview soon. The shop I work at is amazing. This area has pristine roads which are glass free since they have a 5 cent deposit on cans and beer bottles. Despite almost 300" of snow a year there are no potholes and the road come complete with respectable shoulders. My round trip commute to work and back is 22 miles. It includes 1200' of climbing. To say the least my body has been in shock since I moved here. I rountinely use the cannondale in a 34 x26 gearing. That allows me to climb some of the bigger hills at 4mph. I also use the triple on the BMC. I have lost 10 lbs since I moved here. Our house is situated in the woods and the little ones school is less than 2 blocks away. So far, so good. We are awaiting the long promised big snows. Turbo Tuesdays, east coast edition will begin soon.

Flying down the road with NO traffic.

Met up with B.B, Jakey La Cruz, and Uncle Velos for a fantastic night of riding. Rode out to Kirkland via pavement and plenty of gravel, then rode straight north into a nasty headwind to drop Uncle Velos off to the Mrs. At Belvedere we were looking at a 30 mile ride home. The Winds were at our tails for the remainder of the night and we just blasted down Genoa road past midnight riding three breasts side by side. We got kind of Bonky from all the riding and were happy to See Kelley's Market open in Genoa. Some Bear Claws, drinks and we were perked for the rest of the ride. Out of Genoa we took Rte 23 south and had a massive tailwind at the point.

Our steel animals whistled in the air at over 2omph. We were enjoying the complete quietness and the amazing darkness that encompassed us, we were all alone, the three of us. We talked about the Slender Fungus song and how befitting it was to the type of riding that we most loved. We talked about the comfort of night, the missing traffic, the ease to the eyes and how we enjoyed each others company. A quick pang reminded me of this being my last Turbo Tuesday and how we had reached such a high point, a pinnacle of riding. This can only continue and grow.

The Slender Fungus is stronger than ever and will continue to lurk while you sleep.

Proud to have me offspring working at such a prestigious shop in the great city of Chicago. It is a great experience and at a very young age this is her second bicycle shop that she has worked. New bicycles from Handsome were showcased at the exclusive Chrome store in the city and Franny helped set up and do a special "Diamond" wrap on the mustache bars. The Slender Fungus teamates of Ari and Cookie accompanied our significant others to Lake Fontana, Wisconsin for a pretty painful half marathon. We awoke at dark thirty and met up in Wisconsin. I love how you cross the border and the topography changes and the roads get smoother. This was a women only event and we went up for support. The race started promptly at 730 am and it gave Cookie and I a chance to talk about bike shops, Trans Iowa and many other things. We never seem to be able to catch up. I will be moving up to the mountains and we went through some other topics as well. Cookie girlfriend, my wife and new friend Jean had a great race. We found ourselves at the resort with wine in hand listening to a cover band which was actually really good. We later hit the bar pre-noon for some food and New Glarus Spotted Cow. It was a great day and we enjoyed supporting our significant others since they put up with so much crap with our endurance nonsense. Congrats to the ladies and a speed recovery from the effort.

Gypsy Criterion

Had a pretty rainy morning, which I think discouraged attendance. Anyway, we go together at Gumby's house and rode out in rain and cold. The gravel was quiet good and as always it was great to be out in the country. It was great to see my friends for another ride since we will be moving out to the mountains soon. My daughter was in from Chicago fresh out of her sling. She had a run-in with a car and had flipped over the bars on the fixed Zeus and done a double fracture on her collarbone.
Gumby is still nursing his knee which housed his twin, unborn brother for over 30 years. Cookie was sporting a Team Salsa jersey and Joe Meiser facial hair. Since Meiser had a kid Cookie is taking over his spot on the Salsa Team. You go Cookie!!!
Uncle Velos was in for a double loop since it was Sunday and he was in search for a Dry Cleaners that was open to do his suit for a wedding he had to attend in Hollywood,California. B.B. was incapicitated from a long night of Polo and Porto. Polo-Porto-Polo-Porto.
So we rolled and at the end Cookie and I ended the day with 7 loops since I had commitments. I got tired of the Selma, even more when I discovered the seat a full 3cms too low. Man, that's why me legs felt so dead. I guess when you ride a lot off road one should check seat heights since they tend to slip a bit.
All in all it was kind of a weird day. There was this gelling missing. I just can't figure it out. Maybe it had to do with the fact that we rode in daylight. We should have done this ride at night!

Slender Fungus Headquarters

With the intention of finding more gravel and dirt and a bit more peace and quiet, the Slender Fungus Cycling Association Headquarters will be relocating to the above pictured location. It will be time to train hard for the upcoming Mega Miler known as the Trans Iowa Version Number 8.
Many calories must be burned, lambs eaten and endless nights on the mountains with nothing more than some dry bread and a light jacket. This and only this is the way to finish off the beast for once and for all.
While we are away please continue on with Turbo Tuesdays and some "special" rides. Remember to frown upon the thin tired bikes known as "Cheater" bikes for they go fast because of their ability to slice through the heavens. Drink the elixirs that keep us alive. Ride at night because that is when it's right. Wear wool and take a flask. Cause mayhem, start a fire, eat some delicious food.
I have alway enjoyed your company and this and only this has helped me through it. As the days get shorter and the nights get longer I long for the whiskey and the sugary tea. I remember my lonely rides with the long gone Hellmut. The endless nights that saw us welcome the morning. The burning sensation in the eyes when the sun would emit its first rays.
The Fruit Loop, also known as "the destroyer", the ride that left my limbs numb for months. The Gypsy Caravan, the funnest ride of all time. The memories are endless, the jokes too many to list.

I will remember you always as I suffer alone at altitude.

The race will commence at the Slender Fungus Cycling Association World Headquarters which is located at the Gum House on 16710 Lynch rd, Dekalb, IL. 60115
The ride will consist of 9 something mile loops and the rider will receive "tokens" for each loop completed.
The general idea is to complete enough loops to obtain the coveted "Hundo", and not the cheater "metric hundo". There will be music, provided by the Zenith System and refreshments. As usual the event is completely free of charge.
Please leave a comment if you are coming. We would like to start a roster.

The road season was short lived for the Slender Fungus. We mostly end up on uneven terrain thus always needing some extra rubber below us. Our favorite bikes to ride are 29ers, Cyclocross bikes, Fatbikes (Also kwown as Snowbikes and Flotation Bikes). We also love to ride Fixed Gear bikes as the Otter can witness to that. So for the time being the skinny bikes will be stored away somewhere to gather dust once again. Now we are free to concentrate on Fat without any interruptions from the "Speed" department.
Load up those backpacks with food, thermos', a flask or two and plug in those lights and get out there and make a Caravan. Have some fun, stop and look at the stars. Listen to the Coyotes. Take some creepy photos. Dark and Fat is where it's at.

Fall is fast approaching. One of my fav pictures.

So today it rang in the Fall season and with that the changes that always come. It is time to start pulling out the winter clothes, the lights, the thermos and the flask. It is my time of the year to relax after a long, long summer season with no break. I will also prepare a bike or two with fenders for those rainy days that will for sure come our way. I am looking foward to the training and sleep deprivation for Trans Iowa. I am relaxed, feel like an old veteran, and have all the logistics figured out. Luck= no rain, no flats, no broken chains, no broken derailleurs, no broken spirit and hopefully not lost beyond belief.
So with that I hope to get in some good rides in October. Gumby and I have made the first contact for "The Criterion" that the Slender Fungus is going to have.

As we get Savy with websiting we will direct you that way. For the time being the Flandria Website remains a favorite for our readers. Cookie will be heading up to Heck of the North to meet up with endurance Icons Charlie Farrow, Tim Ek,Jason Buffington, Jeremy Kershaw and many others. I am trying to work out my schedule to share in the driving and the gas.

Turbo Tuesday have fallen back on the routine rack since the days are getting shorter and the temps are dropping. We have had a good showing of more than a handful and the rides have been quite fun. Our newest member includes Jakey La Cruz. He was gentleman enough to carry a whole bottle of Port wine which we quenched our thirst with last night. He was also gentleman enough to carry the empty bottle for the remainder of his ride. The River Otter and Jakey kept riding so they could complete the metric they had in mind. Jelly Boy, B.B. and I called it a night around 1:30 a.m. while dose other guys kept riding. The otter was aboard his trusted Crosscheck and rode the metric turning a fixed wheel with no brakes. The night was wonderful, there was little wind and the pause at the 7/11 offered time to get some food and take a break. We will continue with these rides as far as possible.
I am also planning on a underground gravel race to take place in October. We are in planning stages so far but it will have a "Criterion" format with probably 10 laps of miserable gravel to deal with . Location, time and so forth will be discussed soon. No prizes, maybe no numbers (or make your own) and the course will not be closed to traffic,so if you have a boner to win, watch out for cars!.

As you can read on Transit Interface, the Gypsy Caravan was a huge success and will be remembered for a long time. Ten of us gathered: Wifey, meself, BB, Bonk-king, T.J., River Otter, Jakey la Cruz, Dino, JellyBoy and the incredible presence of the Werewolf. We headed south aboard our trusty Bicycles. So to say the least everyone was on a NCC approved machine of mass destruction. We packed food, drink and wore comfortable, casual clothing. We rode down rte 23 and unfortunately distracted the locals until we hit the gravel roads and dissapeared into the sunset. Once we made it to the dirt we set camp and had dinner with the stars. There were sandwiches, homemade tamales, Pheasant, salads, guacamole, chips and many more tasty things. Plenty of quality brews were shared and a little container of jack vanished when the Bonk king got a hold of it. Gumby, our injured Associate, followed us with his 4x4 pickup offering sag, and his friendship. Soon enough it became dark and nobody seemed to mind. We bolted on lights and started the long journey home. We laughed and laughed some more while listening to some great Punk rock off the werewolf's stereo. We had the greatest time and I will never forget this ride. Wifey ended the day with 50 miles on a fully loaded Big Dummy.

Thanks to all of you for toeing the line and being in such a great mood. We hope to do another fun ride soon as the days are getting shorter and the temps are starting to dim.

Trans Iowa is on my mind. Oh Boy!!!!!!!

Trusty BMC is ready for more adventure

As most of you endurance freaks have read or heard the Trans Iowa Version 8 has been announced. Affectionately known as V-8 and not to be mistaken with no juices or cars. This is V-8 that will turn your body inside out and make you numb for months. So we are now in the planning stages as to how to tackle this monster. We have gone to DK200, we have done long rides, we have done the Fruit Loop, and we think and we have nightmares. I have an enourmous passion for this race and just to be lined up for it gives me the chills. Iowa is like no other. She is beautiful, calm, remote, brutal and peaceful. The hills are relentless and make your bones hurt. The weather turns on a dime and makes your life miserable.
I have dreamt for many years to finish the race. I have thought about it and analyzed it for days on end. The Fruit Loop was and incredible ride and clocking 255 with all those hills, gravel and heat was truly an experiment in survival. I still have some numbness in my foot and my right hand. As I approached the 255 mark I became very excited to know that I still had another 70 miles in me to complete the 325 which is Trans Iowa. That ride proved to be a great measure of where we are.
This winter will be brutal as I will embrace the Pugsley and my snowshoes and tackle those tough days when it becomes near impossible to venture outside. There will be no excuses but hard work ahead. V-8 might be the last version and it might be my last chance. I will be checking on equipment such as new frames, wheels and components. My plan is to go uber-prepared.
Training rides will commence September 1st, 2011. In the past I have commenced in October but this year I am altering my plan. I will post training rides and if you wish to join you are welcome. A lot of the rides will take place at night, also during rain, snow, and cold.

Friday night after work we ran out in the Oldsmobile to the Ogle County Fair. What a great time it was. No pretentious people that's for sure. I enjoyed the fact that with paid admission all the rides were free for the kids. The Rodeo was the highlight of the day and shooting pictures was a lot of fun. If you have a chance check out a local fair. You won't be dissapointed.

I would like to congratulate all riders that toed the line for the start of the Fruit Loop. Here are the total miles for each rider. We all hit personal bests and it was a great day to do it.

As you might have heard the ride started on July 31st at 4 am from Ari house. We hit straight down 64 towards Oregon. Everyone was utterly on time and ready to go. Everyone had lights and everyone was prepared. Wow!
I have worked double shifts on Friday and Saturday and had little to no time to prepare. My bike was set and I had opted for 900 gram Schwalbes. Same setup for the rest of the bike as DK200.
The weather promised to be cool in the morning but as soon as the burner came out we started to get hot. You would not believe if I told you that there was absolutely no wind that day. Also the sun was burning like Hell and there was 9 foot corn all around trapping us on the road with no air to breath. We made it to Savanna where Franny and Jelly Boy were to be picked up by my ever patient and lovely wife.
We continued on as she was in transit and started to hit some severe hills around the palisades. Scenic Ridge rd was great, so was Hanover rd heading west with some real steep grades. We arrived at Hanover and took a break at the gas station, we then continued on Black Jack but turned on Rodeen and then Irish Hollow, which is way tougher than Black Jack. We struggled with heat, cramps and relentless hills all the way to Galena. There we fixed Paul's tire and went on for burgers, fries and huge cokes.
Stage Coach Trail burnt my legs and I was already fighting cramps for about 4 hours then. I had switched to the new Carborocket fuel mix and I think my body was not taking it. I walked, streched, ate, drank and drank and drank to no avail. I told Cookie I was done and wanted to be alone. I would finish no matter what.
Jay said we would stick together. So as the sun started to hide behind the big hills I started to cool off a bit. The cramps subsided and I started to feel better. At this point everyone was really starting to feel the ride. We arrived around Apple Canyon around 8 something and as the sun went down, the Slender Fungus started to awake. We started heading south and had all of rte 78 to ourselves since a bridge was out. Llama and Paul started to bonk and finally made it to Mt. Carroll. I think as they were getting more and more tired they stopped eating and drinking and that caused them to hit the wall. Cookie, B.B and I stuffed our faces and mounted up as Llama slept on a D.Q. Picnic table and our rider of the day, Paul , waited for a ride. Good Job Paul, you were very impressive!
We started on rte 64 and had a really long way home. 40 miles to Oregon and then another 33 to Sycamore. We stopped at Mt. Morris for coffee and then headed home. Cookie and B.B. went ahead as they wanted to get it over. I chilled, and had a ton of thoughts through my head. I thought about what an amazing day it was, I thought about how brave my kids are. I also thought about how tough everyone was that day. I was truly grateful. All our equipment functioned perfectly. We never flatted, just rubbed a tire down to the casing before we replaced it.
I hope we can gather again for another adventure like this. I am still looking for my ziploc bag that had my license and debit card. My legs are still sore 4 days after the fact but rode on tuesday, wednesday and today did 30 miles with the wife on the crossbike.

FRUIT LOOP JULY 31ST, 2011

The Slender Fungus Cycling Association
presents The Fruit Loop. Event will take place on the last Sunday of July and will cover almost 250 miles. It will start in Sycamore at 4 am Sunday the 31st and we will return home that night. So lights and gear will be necessary. Most of the riding will be done on pavement but there might be some gravel roads showing up so we again recommend the wider 35mm tires. There is no support, no bailout offered. So ride as much as you want and then figure out whether you want to u-turn or call a friend or family to come get you. We suggest and encourage lights, front and rear and lots of water since a lot of the streches will no have chance of refilling. We would also like to present the Fruit Loop Video done between Jimmy ( our media guy) and myself. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Let me know if you have any questions. This will be a very long day in the saddle. There will be a ton of hills, some places for food and traffic. Please beware that you are responsible for yourself and if you need to bail have a plan in mind. Print out the map and cues if you can. Everyone should have a map in case you get lost. Any questions please let me know. We will be leaving 4am sharp since it is a long ride and we will be out ALL day. Bring front and rear lights for the morning hours and for night time since we will arrive home in the complete darkness.
Here goes the route. I highly recommend bringing a cross bike with 35mm tires since we will possibly ride some gravel or you might the tires in case you have to bail on a shoulder. I do not advise road bikes.

Ride is starting to shape up nice. We are seeing interest in a long ride and I think the weather will be perfect. I wanted to mention that the ride is open and you can ride as much as you like. It is up to you to ride as much as you want and then turn around or go out as far as you want and then have somebody pick you up. We will be providing maps and such. I would also like to see everyone have lights (front and rear) since we are leaving  in darkness and most likely will return in darkness. I would suggest a cross bike with either touring or cross tires since we will see varided terrain. Once we get out to the Big River there will be big,long, steep, sometimes gravel hills to deal with. Bring plenty of liquids, food, meds, booze, phones, cameras, whatever you think you will need. Also bring cash, ID and such. I wanted to put up a post sooner but it just became impossible. After completing the ride and having Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to recover it is just today that I am feeling better. I had a lot of muscle pain, my throat was destroyed, bad sunburn, and a real bad rear end.
Our trip there was fantastic. I had the Wife, my 8 year old girl and the 18 boy as my crew. We also met up with riding buddies Mark and Jay and there crew.
Race meeting was on Friday and the race started on Saturday at 6 a.m. We rode all day in the 100 degree heat. Made the first checkpoint at mile 58 and had already gone through about 180 oz of water. Then made it to the halfway at mile 100. I neglected to drink as much and cramped. Then on to mile 160 and I was feeling really good. That's after going through a storm, complete with lightning, hail, strong winds and no place to hide. Made it to checkpoint 3 around 930 pm and then took off to finish the 200 miles. Rode a strong race, and finished up at 215 am with Aaron from the Nebraska crew. Out of 290 starters only 65 finished. I was in 55th position and in the mens open I finished in 36th place. I have so much more to say about all this put it is just not coming out. Maybe in the future I will be able to put it in words. It was truly amazing and I must say that I slayed a lot of demons and rode as hard as a could. Good organization on our part, bikes were perfect, hydration was awesome. Thanks to my family for dealing with this and to good friends Mark, Jay, Jill and Jim for being so awesome. Dirty Kanza was a great event and I hope to participate again.

WE met at 8:00 and rolled out, all 4 of us. It did not surprise us that nobody else showed up since the number 100 keeps them away. The weather was cool in the morning and the weather started to warm up quickly. We had a slight wind in the early morning and then it quickly picked up from the south to a full rage South wind of 30 plus mph. We rode out to Compton, West Brooklyn and finally Amboy. Then we headed north and then started heading back east. We had long streches of bad side wind and the heat started to cook us. I used some elete stuff that Mark gave me and never cramped the whole day. We had no mechanicals except for a lost cleat screw.
The riding was really good, the route was excellent, the scenery was awesome and the fact that we had a tornado watch on our asses kept us motivated. The Slender Fungus will be hosting other long rides and as always we won't make a big deal out of them. We will just post and ride. Everyone is always welcome to ride, it doesn't cost anything and you are on your own. Finished the day with 110 miles.

We are going to gather and ride in a Southwest directions. God only knows where the werewolf is sending us. Please let me know in the comments if you want to come so we can print cue sheets. Surface will be mixed so please don't bring your brother's Tribike from 1989 with 18mm tires. There will be no support or bail out so make a plan if you bonk. This is just a fun ride to celebrate the coming of spring.

So after missing the first checkpoint we gathered a small group and had a great ride back to Grinnell. We rode roughly 30+ miles completing the day with about 90 miles. We hit the hotel and then took a much needed long shower. Chichard ordered some pizzas while we got into Giggles' Crv and did some sightseeing out in the country. Iowa is truly beautiful and we geeked out on taking a bunch of great photographs. We came back for the pizza and drinks and then hit the bed and slept like logs. We awoke to the idea of getting to the finish line to catch some of the finishers.
We were suprised to see how late Dennis Grelk, T.I. V. 7 finisher came in. The course was very demanding and there would be no such thing as a sub 24. No way.
We hung around the park and got a chance to talk to old friends and also meet our new comrade Kershaw from the DBD group in Duluth. It was a glorious morning and I was so pumped and so excited. I controlled my emotions as to not blow it and induce another one of my famous asthma attacks.
And then............... over a little riser we saw a rider. I called out rider up! Much to my desbelief and utter amazement it was good friend Dennis Grelk. He was winning the Trans Iowa and there was nobody even remotely close to him! I was so excited and so proud of his achievement. He arrived and we all congratulated him and stood around him at least 10 feet away. He was a strange alien that had just conquered the beast. He needed all the oxygen available. He dismounted his horse but his body remained in mounted position. The saliva around his mouth had turned into a dark tar and he struggled to remove it. His bike was light, and awesome. His wool clothing had functioned perfect, his lights had not failed him. He had hit it on the head and accomplished the Big One!
After Dennis we awaited for the other riders. Tim Ek, Charlie Farrow, Troy Krause, Sean Maillen, John Gorilla. They were all tired, they were all lost for words. I snapped picture after picture and was so happy to have shared those moments. I forgot about all my misfortunes and was thankful to be there.
We said our goodbyes and headed back for lunch and to pack up and leave. Jay left with Chichard in the Wheelfast truck and Giggles and I took the crv. We had intense conversations on I-80 and were so happy to have met up and ridden Trans Iowa together. We have friends, riding partners and great memories. Thanks again to Guitar Ted and David Pals. We know how tired you are and what you went through. I really hope to have the chance to participate in a future Trans Iowa and that these great men will decide to offer this gift to us.
Thanks to the city of Grinnell, the chamber of commerce, the volunteers, Bikes to you. To all the riders and everyone associated with this event. It was a true pleasure.

The start at 4 a.m. in Grinell, Iowa

It took me a while to gather my thoughts and to deal with some ailments that I brought back from Iowa. But I am ready to move foward, make this post and start riding again soon. 2011 marks 41 years since I have learned to ride a bicycle. I learned to ride in Jersey City, N.J. while visiting family friends. I finally crashed into a pile of garbage and impaled my leg with a piece of sheet metal that ripped my leg open and filled my white levis jeans with blood. The doctor at the E.R. patiently sewed my leg back together as my dad looked on an talked about how kids end up being such a huge expense. I never let go of the bicycle and it has become and essential part of my existence.
This year marked my 4th attempt at completing Trans Iowa. I had been nervous about the registration and once that was over it became a matter of staying trim and putting in the miles. It helped immensely that I purchased a Surly Pugsley to deal with the relentless winter. I piled on the miles, and stayed away from the beer, ice cream and all other foods that would add weight onto my already large frame. I came really well prepared to Trans Iowa with low weight, 3 thousand miles since january first, 2011, a perfect bike, perfect nutrition.
The planning took place through countless e-mails between Giggles, Jay and I. We worked and re-worked all kinds of details.
Giggles made the trek from N.Y. by car and we all met at my house. We left exactly on time on friday before the race. Bikes were loaded and we headed out to Grinnell with our sights high on a finish. Our Good friend Chi-chard would do support for us so we felt comfortable and secure in throwing ourselves out there and not holding anything back.
Jay rode on a Gunnar Crosshairs, I was aboard a Black Mountain Cycles and Giggles on his custom built Salsa Fargo . We all ran Revelate Designs Bags, and eliminated all excess weight.
We arrived early at the hotel, unloaded, and layed out our stuff, We went to the pool and hot-tub ot relax and calm our nerves. We took a walk to the steakhouse to strech out the the legs after the drive. We had our steaks, met with our old pals and took our packets. Everything was working to perfection. We hit the sack and tried to sleep. It was hard since something we had waited for so long was about to happen in just a couple of hours.
Before long the alarm was blasting and we sprung from our beds.. Cheese Danish and Double shot cans for breakfast. We got dressed, lubed Chamois' and rolled out to the start. I was wearing wool knickers, wool socks, wool undershirt, Bianchi wool jersey and a Craft vest. I was perfect.
We did the roll out and the nerves started to calm inmediately . We hit the gravel and it was a soupy, creamy top layer that was not impossible to ride on but sure enough it was creating some friction. The hills started to arrive and my legs started to burn since I need about 45-50 miles just to warm up. It was terrible to climb on cold legs. I was thankful for the triple and I managed to get going slowly but surely.
We came to the mouth of a B-road and saw the tracks leading directly into it. I quickly dismounted and told Jay to keep his bike off the mud. We pushed and carried and pushed and carried for at least 1 mile, eating up about 30 minutes of precious time. We continued on as we just kept following other riders tracks. At the end of the B-road we stopped to hit our shoes on asphalt and dislodge the mud. We continued straight as we continued to see the leaders tracks. As we summitted a hill we saw the white lights of the leaders coming at us.
That is where I started to get disheartened and noticed we had made a mistake. We should have made a left before the B-road . We followed them as they corrected the mistake and got back on track. At that point Jay and I rode together since getting to the checkpoint was our number one priority.
Jay rode his heart out and covered me all along. He shielded the wind from the front, my side and even gave me some hard pushes to make me get up the hills. I was redlining all the way and loved my triple ever so much. I gobbled gels, and fought cramps with curses and copious amounts of the most excellent Carbo-rocket. Jay would help me up the relentless hills and then I would recover and bomb down the other side. We never gave up and I came to realize how extremely talented my partner was. We were getting close to the checkpoint and as we rolled with a tailwind we noticed a rider coming towards us. We had missed the last turn. A farmer was not amused by the riders going by and spooking the cows so apparently he tore down the flags indicating the turn. I sent Jay off to make the Checkpoint since I was well done and cooked. I kept riding hard just in case we were granted extra minutes for the B-road incident. I arrived to the first checkpoint 5 minutes late. Jay arrived 60 seconds late and Giggles was about 30 minutes behind. We were deeply dissapointed at the news but as good sports came to terms and enjoyed the company of awesome friends, amazing vistas of an incredible State called Iowa and to 2 amazing organizers as in Guitar Ted and David Pals. The volunteers were very friendly and we just had a blast the whole weekend.
We decided to take a ride back to Grinnell and we gathered a group and cruised with a massive tailwind on some awesome county road.
I definetely learned even more this time. I learned to check my cue sheets and not rely on others tracks. I learned to pack even lighter. I learned to not forget my reading glasses and my endurolyte pills.
I would like to congratulate Dennis Grelk on an amazing finish, win, ride! Charlie Farrow for riding to beyond limits. Tim Ek for suffering so much and giving that big smile, Troy Krause, Sean Mailen , John Gorilla for inspiring performances.
I would also like to thank my amazing Slender Fungus team mates, Dr. Giggles and Jay for all your efforts. Thanks to my wife and all kids for supporting me during my rough days and long nights of being away from home riding.

Trans Iowa Version # 7 will be remembered for a long time. It was an amazing experience.

He is 6'5.5", has an unrelentless desire to ride in the crappiest weather, and will most likely always have his Garmin mounted on his bike so we wouldn't get lost. Since he is only 1.5" inches taller than me we could share machines in a pinch. We will let him settle down after an amazing victory at Paris Roubaix. We congratulate him and wish to ride with his hard ass soon.

Sunday was a very very windy day. B.B. and I got out on the Fixies, since we are such f@@@cking hipsters. We rode north to a secret route that we have and ended up somehow behind Walmart in Belvedere. We then rode 30 miles south into a headwind. I dropped B.B off at home after a Metric since he had to attend a Hott birthday party again. I then rode due east to my sister in laws house for a family gathering all the way out to westmont. So I remounted the steamroller and kept riding. My Mileage for the day was 111 miles and around 8 hours of saddle time. My legs were sore, I was sunburned and the chamois-loob had dried up down under so I was kinda raw. Great day on the bike. Today I freewheeled to work and back to loosen up the legs. Trans Iowa is on April 23rd.

Just in case you are interested this will be my bike that I will ride Trans Iowa on . I am awaiting a thomson Setback Seatpost in Silver and have already obtained the White Rolls. Will be running new xtr wheels outfitted with Schwalbe Marathon Extremes in 700x35c with Challenge Latex tubes. Cranks will have 26x36x48 chainwheels and cassette will be 11x34. Shimano pedals, Revelate Designs Tangle bag, Revelate designs Gas tank, Dinotte and Princeton Tec lights. Carborocket and Honeystinger nutrition and also Platypus softbottles for backup. Luxy bars will get Cinelli gel pads for added comfort. Clothing will be mostly wool as in wool knickers by Ibex, wool undershirt, wool jersey. Craft windwest, cannodale rain jacket and wool socks. Pedals and shoes probabley Shimano. Chain lube will be dry lube if dry and wet lube if miserable.

The Great Western Trail is fully open and possible on a fixed gear outfitted with 700x23 tires at 110 p.s.i.

Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Beaver have been busy while you snooze your alarm in the morning. They are constructing the hugest Dam known to mankind and are planning on flooding and regaining Dekalb County to the wilderness once more. Move to higher grounds while you can.

My smarty 8 year old told me that her Pucci Purse was warmer than any of my fancy Mountaineering hats. Much to my disbelief she was proven right and the Slender Fungus will be riding these as hats next year.

On my day off I had the goal of finishing a bottle of Jack Daniel's. I had the luck to watch the highly sofisticated and intelligent movie Talladega Nights and while watching the movie Jack hit me square on and I was out. I awoke to the cold drink dripping on my t-shirt. This is what I havc to do to calm my pre-t.I. jitters. Now if I could only not get sick and if the conditions would remain dry and it wouldn't be windy, or too hilly and not get a bad boil I think I would be able to finish. If I don't finish the wife told me not to come back home as I will enter old age and become intolerable. I hate bikes, I hate riding, and commuting by bike is totally gay. If I don't finish I am trading the Pantani-mobile in for a Camaro and I swear I will riddle this town with donuts and burnouts,

B.B. and I got out late tonight in search of Gumby. Last time we rode with him he had taken off fast almost breaking our legs. He then turned around and rode into the darkness. We have not seen him since. According to our Slender Fungus Intelligence brigade he has been spotted in some remote Quilt Shows in the areas of Illinois and possibly Iowa. We believe he is doing recon work for the Slender Fungus and is in search of more Gravel goodness. Whatever the case is if you see a rider dressed completely in black with a Gum Trucking jacket, Black Gary Fisher Presidio Cyclo-cross bike be advised to let us know. We need to have a word with him.
If you have any info on his whereabouts please contact the Slender Fungus Cycling Association Headquarters or just call the Bike shop. In any case you will be compensated with a finger of whiskey or a strong cup of coffee.

On Saturday April 23 @ 4:00 a.m. we will be rolling in our quest to finish what I think is the hardest race in America. We have been training for a really long time and riding in cold, nasty weather has lost it's fun. It is time to dust off the summer stuff and not get cold toes anymore. I feel prepared, the bike is almost ready, some nutrition stuff to still get and a couple more rides to get in. This year I will be riding a different bike than pictured and will be even more conscious of what I carry. Just hoping for some decent weather.

Finally it happened that I was motivated enough to get on the Surly Steamroller fixed speed bike and round out a hundred miler. I rode to Sycamore, then Genoa, then Belvedere, then Cherry Valley, stopped for lunch, then Kirkland, then Malta, then Dekalb, then Sycamore. I churned the gear all day and never got tired. The racer dude passed me on secret location and while still Digesting a mighty exquisite Cheeseburger, Fries and 3 cups of coffee I decided to give chase. I was going to chase him down like a dog and not let go of him. Quickly he started to play with his Sti shifters as if all those gears were not good enough. We rode hard all the way from Cherry Valley to Kirkland. I took some pulls and he also pulled. He was smooth, had excellent style and his bike was set up real Pro. I complimented him on his style and form on the bike. The steamroller was hitting 25 many a times as my tired legs turned into pretzels. He turned around in Kirkland and i quickly slowed down my pace. A great day of riding, truly.
Today I thought that maybe the 5 dollars a gallon will help all those jelly heads that drive like maniacs calm down a bit. I was also thinking of the Nuclear reactor meltdown in Japan and the hazard that has caused. I like how the area we live in some-how ignores that fact that we have such a reactor in Byron, just 30+ miles away. Maybe we should turn some lights off? Maybe we don't need to hightlight our McMansions with exterior lights like our home is a trophy. Who freakin' cares??

Another Tuesday, another Metric.

Thanks to B.B. for hanging out with me and helping me get those long rides in. The weather has been a bummer to say the least. Last night we rode out to St. Charles and back. By the time I went to hit my water bottle up for some liquid it was frozen once again. We both got out on the Surly Steamrollers and it felt great to just roll with the punches. So far this month we have ridden 1 century and 3 metrics. Besides that we have been commuting and doing some shorter 20,30,40 milers. Trans Iowa is fast approaching and I am starting to feel better. I am really looking foward to some warmer weather. I really need to ditch my Lake Winter boots and ride in some lighter clothing.
Tomorrow I am going long. It might just be a day of riding.

Still accepting the fact that I have a real Titanium bike.

Took the day off yesterday since I had felt good about my mileage so far this year. This week is the start of my fixed gear run. Rode to work , then came home, ate dinner and hit the GWT. BTW, the trail is fully open so stop hiding. The Fixed gear always helps me spin the legs, build some muscle and it just plain makes me ride better. I have the steamroller set up with carbon fork, king headset, thomson stem and nitto bars. Velo Orange seapost, PHil/velocity rear wheel, Mavic hub/rim in front. Conti tires. Great bike, solid, fast, and capable. Get one already.

Rapid Transit Bike shop, Chicago, IL.

My 14 year old just got done doing an intership at a bike shop in Berlin, Germany. He is stoked about moving back to the States and starting to ride with the Slender Fungus. He will be our youngest member. Morrie has been a bike nut for a long time and his serious attitude and smooth pedaling technique promises a long life on the bike. My second to oldest daughter Franny just landed a job at Rapid Transit bike shop in Chicago. She has started a Cross team and will be hitting the races this fall. I am very proud to see that the kids have picked up Cycling as their sport.

Our destination for tonight

a moment of panic as we lost the o-ring to the Stanley flask.

A perfect road to ride on .

A great house to live in.

We also hit some gravel just to make it nice.

We were so sure to run into the werewolf. We left my house around 430 and started to head nw towards rockford, il. We ran into a stiff nw wind all the way there. The roads were wonderful and the traffic light. Dogs were good and owners even better since they had their poochies fenced. We rocked the heavy bikes with fat rubber so as not to feel that we were cheating. We brought lights for the darkness that we knew we were going to encounter, we brought money for dinner and winter outfits for the 25 degree ride back home. We ended up in Cherry Valley and headed to the local diner for Burgers and Fries and some hot coffee. We filled our bellies and around 8 pm started the ride back home. Darkness it was and the roads out there were pitch black. We were amazed at the stars and how cold it was. We took breaks and kept hitting the full flask. Arrived home around 10:30 and the legs were good. Had a great ride, laughed too much and it was truly relaxing. No sign of the werewolf but then we figured he would not be out since there was no moon. Too bad you missed it again.

Hiding from the wind and replenishing with Irish Whiskey

One of the darkest nights ever.

It almost did not make sense to hunt down the wolf the other night. It was cold, it was raining and the wind was howling at double digit numbers. The weather.gov forecast had predicted strong winds, thunderstorms, possible Tornado and other calamaties. B.B and I had a mission to accomplish and we just saddled up and rode. We altered our trip to be mostly s-n-n-s as to stay away from the stiff wind that was coming out of the East. It was the darkest night ever and B. B kept getting texts to come home for safety. We heard some strange noises, some elusive shadows were kinda seen near some woods near Lloyd. B.B's courage has been quite encouraging and good to see. The rest of the comunity has been hiding indoors in fear of the weather and the Fangs of the Werewolf. We intend to commit to our route heading towards Cherry Valley because that is where we think he is hiding out. Besides that we have heard there is a pizzeria and a diner in that general area.

Werewolf Hunt Ride

Here is a sketch of what we are looking for! He is not as ferocious as he looks.
Ooooooohhhhh.

We are going out into the Darknesss in hunt of the elusive Werewolf that has been roaming Dekalb. I have a hunch he hits the Cherry Valley area during the middle of the week. Let me know if you are interested in coming. This ride will call for good quality lights that are functioning well and the you see and be seen. Cameras to perhaps snap a picture of the Werewolf we are looking for. WE also advice our participants that we will be riding on "paved" roads so our defense is to always be ready to bail into the ditch. Skinny tires, flimsy plastic frames with 6 spoke wheels are not recommended or allowed.
Here goes the map in all its Map my ride Glory. We will stop at Cherry Valley to get some grub and refuel. Looks like mileage-wise it should be another Metric. Anybody should be able to make this and still go to work next day.

Went out for a drive after dinner. My daughter is going to school in Chicago and she just needed to see some open land. We drove on some soft gravel and saw many lightning strikes in the horizon. Apart some selling a ton of Carbon and Aluminum and Steel Steeds at North Central Cyclery we have fallen in love with Titanium. We feel that this material is strong, light, resist corrosion and gives a springy, lively ride. Tobie and I have purchased two Ti bikes. He is currently riding a Titanium La Cruz decked out with full Sram Red, Hed wheels, Enve (edge) fork and seatpost, Avid Ultimate brakes. IT is dreamy. Above is my Ti Mariachi, decked out in a 2x10 fashion with xo rear, x9 cranks, shifters, Avid hydraulic brakes, and tubeless wheels stans, and a Super-fancy Reba 29er fork. I have NEVER owned such a nice bike and I ride this thing in disbelief. Stem is the real nice Promoto Ti and Salsa CArbon bars. I am using ESI grips. Bike is superlight, has a very smooth ride and I plan on keeping it for a very long time.

First of all I would like to thank Mike Varley from Black Mountain Cycles for designing and considering so many factors into this fine machine. You see this bike is not to be sitting on a pedestal. It is to be ridden a lot and to get chipped, dirty and rusty. Mike delivered the frame as promised. Bike came packaged great. Frame adjustments screws, roller, seatclamp were included. The fork uses , what seem to be the same exact crown as my fancy Gunnar Crosshairs. All cables are top mounted , so no mud issues, adjusters for rear brake and front derailleur. Headtube is a bit longer so you don't have to silly the bike with a ton of spacers. I built up the bike with the king headset, Weinmann Mafac brakes, Ragleys amazing Luxy Bars, 9 speed barenders. Sugino triple, xt front, deore rear, Xtr touring wheels, folding touring contis. American classic seatpost, Ridley saddle, Cinellii Cork tape, with Shimano brake levers. Test rode it for 10 miles, then my first significant ride was the Bonkfest 100. NO adjustments, no issues, got off the bike and everything was perfect. Bike is super-smooth, Tons of clearance for huge tires, Turns well, absorbs shock, It looks hot. A super-great machine. Will be changing to Thomson seatpost, White rolls saddle, New Xtr Wheels, No sure on tires for T.I.

Fox River Trail around Midnight

St. Charlies skyline.

Gumby, B.B and I headed out for the weekly dose of riding that we normally do on wednesdays. Weather was finally manageable and we rode at a brisk pace out to rte 47. The trail still has some ice so we took Old State to the Speedway and than hopped on the trail. B.B and I then rode out to St.Charles and rode of the ped bridge that goes over the Fox. We continued north on the fox river trail and ended up by Al Capone's hideout. Did some steep hill riding and then headed back. Wind was stiff out of the south and the temps started to drop. Made the long drag home as the night was getting longer and longer. We realized we were tired because of the time change. The trail felt soggier and we stopped several times to get energized and to empty a flask. Arrived home very tired around 2 am. Total miles for the day 69. Metric Accomplished. Sunday's Century accomplished. Today will call for shorter ride and relaxing.
